Macbeth Connection - The whack heard around the world
Tonya Harding was a figure skater, and a great one at that. She was incredible, actually. But not everyone thought so. She was rough around the edges, and it showed in her skating. To her credit, she had a hard childhood. Her parents were allegedly abusive and involved with substance abuse. She was poor and had to make her own costumes. This would all serve against her. Her rival, Nancy Kerrigan, was America's sweetheart. Kerrigan was affluent, graceful, and wore tons of sparkles and rhinestones. She was the little ice princess. No matter how hard she tried, the judges would never let Tonya's rough, athletic style surpass the elegance of Nancy Kerrigan.
This was all fun and games until the Olympics came around. There was more on the line than ever before. Tonya saw Nancy as the only skater standing in her way and keeping her from olympic gold. This was much like Lady Macbeth seeing Duncan as the only person standing in their way for the throne. In what might be seen as just a coincidence, it was not much longer that Nancy Kerrigan was attacked at her practice rink while getting off the ice. The man had aimed for her knees, but had only managed her upper shins. This man would soon be revealed to be Tonya's ex husband Jeff Gillooly, otherwise known as the Macbeth to her Lady Macbeth. Though Tonya to this day denies any involvement, Gillooly (who has since changed his name to Jeff Stone to avoid further association) remains insistent that Tonya hatched the plan and gave the OK after a night of drinking.
By knocking Nancy out of the competition, theoretically Tonya was guaranteed Gold. The problem was, Nancy's knees weren't broken. Dubbed "The whack heard around the world", the case had become an overnight sensation. Videos of Nancy's infamous cries "whyyyyyyyyy? Whyyyyy meeeeeee?" had crossed every television screen in the nation. But she was only bruised, and she still destined for the olympics. She would come back to haunt Tonya, like Duncan's ghost. Tonya would barely manage anything at the Olympics, while Nancy got second to Ukrainian Oksana Baul.
Lady Macbeth and Tonya Harding have a lot in common. Their manipulate ways have earned them a reputation in the worst of ways. They are notoriously sketchy and masters of saying "It wasn't me". Though a crowbar isn't necessarily a dagger, its all about intentions. And for these ladies, no good deed goes unpunished.
