Macbeth Connection - Josie Pinero

By: Macbeth is a book that is based off of a man named Macbeth who was told a prophecy by three witches that he would become king, but he must take precaution for Banquo's kids since they will be the next kings for generations to come. His thoughts automatically trailed to murdering the King (Duncan), but quickly changed as he got to his senses. His wife, Lady Macbeth, attempted to change his mind by challenging his manhood, diminishing his masculinity, and overpowering his conscience. After some convincing by his wife, Macbeth ended up killing Duncan; after killing the king, Macbeth killed Banquo because he suspected the murder of Duncan to be committed by Macbeth. The Macbeth's lost their humanity and sanity, and when he finally became the king, Lady Macbeth killed herself because of the guilt she felt. At the end of the book, Macbeth ended up dying in battle and relented the thrown to Fleance (Banquo's son).

Macbeth is similar to the movie, Hercules. Towards the beginning of Hercules, the God of the underworld, Hades, was met by three witches who were responsible for taking lives and telling the future. They told him that he would be the ruler of the world and overthrow Zeus, but he must watch out for Zeus's son, Hercules. When Hades is told this news, he automatically feels like he needs to eliminate Hercules. He convinces his "minions" that they must take away all of his strength and power, take him out of Olympus into the world, and then kill him. When the minions take the son, they feed him a certain drink that would take away his "Godlike" powers. They ended up not giving him the whole drink, and Hercules was alive still containing his strength; he was raised by an old couple on earth. He grows up and attempts to find his place in the world by becoming a hero for the people. Hades sees this and brings temptations (a girl named Meg) his way, which led him to taking Hercules strength. Towards the end of the movie, Hercules gains his strength back, saves the girl and the world. He is offered a spot back into Olympus, but he turns it away for Meg.

Macbeth and Hercules are similar because in each story/movie, there were three witches that told a prophecy that led to an attempt in murder and an overthrow. They both also Had someone to do their "dirty work". In Macbeth, Lady Macbeth told Macbeth to kill the king, while Hades told his "minions" to kill Hercules. Another thing is both Macbeth and Hercules are seen as heroes towards the end of their journeys; they both fought for what was right against the "bad guys" and were later recognized as heroes for their actions.

  1. I like the topic of greek mythology in relation to hercules. I also think that Lady Macbeth could be like Medusa because everything she comes into contact with gets destroyed in some way or form. The people she invited into her home caught the brunt of her manipulation and two facedness. She played the sweet housewife, but in reality she was ready to turn them to stone.
