Macbeth Connection-ish Mike Doyle
The main villain in the video game DOOM (2016), Olivia Pierce, evokes many connections to
Macbeth. Olivia Pierce is a brilliant scientist who gained recognition as one of the founders of
NanoStruct Aerospace and Defense Systems, in addition to a fortune. This company's success
was helped by large donation from another titan in the science industry; Dr. Samuel Hayden
who is a 9 foot tall cyborg whom I like to call Dr. Scary Voice, due to his deep, gravely, robotic
voice. Olivia Pierce refuses to join his company, the UAC (Union Aerospace Corporation) which
uses “hell” as a source of energy called “Argent.” However, she eventually joins the company
as the leader of the Lazarus Project, when an ancient “hell” artifact is put into the mix. This rise
to power is quite similar to Macbeth’s promotion to Thegn of Cawdor.

As Olivia worked on the artifact, she becomes corrupted by it; causing her to focus on her work and
spend more and more time in the lab. It is later learned that she is being manipulated by a mysterious
scary voice, who presumably is Satan. The mysterious scary voice (not to get confused with
Dr. Scary Voice) is quite similar to Lady Macbeth and the witches. The voice manipulates Olivia to do
it’s bidding, like Macbeth, promising Olivia that the demons will build a new world for mankind and
also tells her a prophecy of some sort, which is never elaborated on. She is soon convinced to set off
the “Lazarus Wave,” an energy wave which mutated ⅔ of the UAC employees on Mars into demons
that killed off the rest of the employees, killing 61,337 people in total. This is similar to all of the foul
acts that Macbeth committed, since Olivia and Macbeth were both manipulated into committing those
actions by someone else, which then gave both Olivia and Macbeth much more power.

because he is a giant robot, woke up “Doomguy” from his long nap in a stone sarcophagus after he is
led into a trap by some tricky demons. Doomguy has many other titles, such as “Doom Slayer,” “Hell
Walker,” and “Doom Marine.” Doomguy is a Marine who is devoted to combating “Hell” and seeking
vengeance on Satan himself, because some demons killed his pet rabbit Daisy. He speaks through
his actions and not words, never saying a word in the game, letting his shotgun do the talking.
However, his anger is quite obvious as he rampages through the game, destroying everything in his
path while chasing after Olivia Pierce, trying to stop her from causing any more harm. Doomguy is like
the English army, which marches to Macbeth’s castle, seeking justice on Macbeth.

is turned into the “Spider Mastermind,” a giant four legged “spider” with an even bigger brain.
Of course, Doomguy defeats the spider mastermind, finishing the monster off with the BFG
(Big F****** Gun). He then is brought back from “Hell” by Dr. Scary Voice where he steals an
artifact from Doomguy which he plans to use as a source of energy for mankind, replacing the
old system. This event is easily compared to the death of Macbeth, and the cycle of kings in
Scotland which continues on and on.
