Troy- Connection to "Never Let Me Go"
In many ways, I can compare the novel "Never Let Me Go" to the latest Star Wars film, "Rogue One" because both main characters are in a situation where they are sucked into a life that decides their fate and are forced to live it. In the film, the main character, Jyn Erso is recruited by the Rebellion to steal the Death Star plans; in return, she will not be punished for her previous actions in crime (so if she turns the offer down, she will be arrested), most likely induced by the fact that her tech-savvy father was taken when she was young so he could make the plans for the Death Star. In Never Let Me Go, Hailsham students like Kathy are born into a life where they are essentially science experiments and donate their organs to die. Furthermore, they both know they will die in their ultimate fates; Jyn in Star Wars is on a suicide mission to save the chances of the Rebellion against the Empire and Kathy is faced with the fact that her organs will be taken away from her at a fairly young age as a clone for science. In both the film and the movie, the main characters are taken in for the benefit and well-being of their own societies; however, these characters end up giving more than expected for their civilization. In Star Wars, she assembles a good team and inspires many others to fight the nearly impossible fight (97.6% chance of failure to be exact) when she announces, "What chance do we have? The question is "what choice." Run, hide, plead for mercy, scatter your forces. You give way to an enemy this evil with this much power and you condemn the galaxy to an eternity of submission. The time to fight is now!" In Never Let Me Go, Kathy becomes a carer and is quite a good one, as she explains, "My donors have always tended to do much better than expected. Their recovery times have been impressive, and hardly any of them have been classified as “agitated,” even before fourth donation." Thus, she is not only a donor for the cause of the experiment later on; she also helps other donators to be stable mentally and donate effectively.
I really like this connection to Star Wars! I find the connection between Kathy and Jyn very interesting. I agree that they are both great leaders, even though Jyn is physically fighting while Kathy is fighting for her donors to stay alive.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great connection as Hailsham students(especially Kathy) are indeed in many ways similar Jyn Erso. They both know that they will die in the end but despite this they still help better the world or the cause. Both Hailsham students and Jyn Erso I think they both resemble the idea of the many instead of the few in this example.
