Wes Pierce Esch and Medea

By: At this point in the novel, Esch has told Manny that she is pregnant and that it is his baby, in which he responds with denial and shakes off the information that she has just given to him as if it wasn't important or it was her problem, following this Esch attacks Manny when she states, "I love you!' 'Esch!' The skin on his throat is red, his scar white. 'I loved you!' I hit his Adam's apple with the V where my thumb and pointer finger cross. He chokes. 'I loved you!' This is Medea wielding the knife. This is Medea cutting. I rake my fingernails across his face, leave pink scratches that turn red, fill with blood."(Ward, 204) By Esch both making this attack on Manny and making a clear statement that this is "Medea wielding the knife," this allusion is showing that these two specific women feel as if they need to be with the men they love, and when these men try and walk out of their lives as if they were never there, the women do not know what else to do besides try and make them stay, and in these cases, that is done by violent physical actions.

This is a painting done of medea titled "The Disillusioned Medea(The Enchantress)" by Paulus Bor. It was created around 1640 and it is a painting showing the sadness and heartbreak Medea suffered after Jason had turned against her.
















I believe that the eye of a hurricane represents Esch well because although everything around her is chaos both emotionally and physically due to the hurricane, within herself she is pretty well collected in the situation at hand about both trying to stay alive and thinking about her future as a mother.

    I agree with her being represented as the eye of the hurricane while everything else going on in her life is the storm. Her mom died, Manny doesn't love her back, she's pregnant, and her whole family lives through a terrible hurricane yet at the end of the novel she survives and perseveres. I think maybe the lack of having a mother has forced her to mature and because of this maturity she is able to stay calm and well collected. She accepts the fact she is pregnant and has turned her focus from trying to win over Manny to raising her kid.

     Throughout Salvage the Bones, Ward makes connections between Esch and Medea both implicitly and explicitly, seeing as Esch and Medea are very similar characters. Esch relates to the mythical woman and wishes to think of herself as a version of Medea. One point in the novel that I think perfectly encompasses this idea is a quote on page 38, "In Mythology , I am still reading about   Medea and the quest for the Golden Fleece. Shakespeare’s Macbeth is a bloody and multi-faceted tale of corruption and exploitation. Right off the bat, readers are introduced to conflicted and naive Macbeth, a Scottish general who becomes obsessed with the idea of power, after receiving his prophecy at the beginning of the play from a trio of witches that say he will become King of Scotland. NLMG Connection post- Wes Pierce

Throughout Never Let Me Go, we constantly debated the topic of whether it is okay or not for Kathy and her friends to have their organs harvested in this dystopian setting. Although we know that this is simply a story and nothing more, this is a serious issue in the real world today. In this article by Dale Archer,   he discusses the serious issue of organ harvesting throughout the black market globally. Archer explains the various issues in regards to organ harvesting, such as young children and teenagers suddenly dying because of organ harvesting. He states that many of the "clients" that needs these organs are wealthy, greedy, middle age men in need of an instantaneous transplant. Archer also notes that this organ harvesting process can have ties to human and sex trafficking. The demand for such organs relates to nearly the entire concept of Never Let Me Go mainly because Kathy and her friends don't have a choice that their organs are being taken and they are essential...
