Nick Traver's Esch & Medea
In this quote, Esch is comparing herself to Medea, and also Manny to Jason. In the myth of the golden fleece Medea helped Jason with her magic, because she loves him, but Jason does nothing but betray her. Esch feels connected to Medea because she gives Manny her love and her body but he does nothing in return. All he does is take, not give. To Esch, Medea is a symbol of what a women would do for a man, and maybe also an example of how man has authority over women, and can control them. To sum up, Esch sees herself as Medea, she sees herself as a women who is controlled by a man just as Medea does.

This piece of artwork is a depiction of Medea charming and causing the snake to fall asleep so that Jason can steal the golden fleece.
I chose this image honestly because I couldn't find anything that I thought would symbolism Esch well. Their were a few things that I knew about Esch by the end of the book though, that she had became much more independent and self-empowered. I thought that this was a good depiction of those two traits, because it is showing what the power of one could do, and if you put your mind to something you can do anything. And you don't always need a man.
I agree with you on about how Medea is similar to Esch, due to what they would do for Jason and Manny. However I was confused because your second picture and the last three lines of your summary of the quote because you said that she was being bossed around by Manny, but your picture to symbolize her was empowerment to her. Are these different parts in the book?
