Macbeth Connection- Aidan O'Loughlin
Elsa Is Practically Lady Macbeth
Originally the prospect that Lady Macbeth is similar to Elsa might sound ridiculous, but they actually undergo very similar issues. To start Elsa and Lady Macbeth are both in similar positions. Elsa and Lady Macbeth both gain the status of queen over there respective stories. While Elsa might have magical powers and Lady Macbeth is powerless, they both have dark pasts. In Frozen we see the backstory of how Elsa has been forced to secretly hide her magic powers and consequently is suffering, and is tormented by what she has done to her sister. In Macbeth, we get the hint that Lady Macbeth lost a child in the past, and that she never really got over it. Later we see Lady Macbeth, after she helps plan and cover up the assassination of King Duncan, she is tormented by her action. In lady Macbeth's case, she feels she can never wash the blood off her hands so she ends up sleep walking and will feign washing her hands. Elsa has an obsession with wearing gloves, because of what she did to her little sister, she wears gloves to "contain" her power and she is terrified of her hands. Meaning both have a fixation on their hands. Finally They both undergo mental break downs with Elsa being revealed as having magical powers and running away to the mountains. While Lady Macbeth can no longer cope with what she does so she kills herself. There are so many similarities. The biggest difference between them being that Elsa is from a kids movie and Lady Macbeth is from a Shakespearean tragedy.

That is a big difference. I agree with what you were saying with the mental breakdowns, and the weird fixation with their hands, but both handle the past in different ways. Lady Macbeth sleeps walks, and won't let her sane self accept what is going on, and how she is feeling. This differs from Elsa as she decides to "let it go" and doesn't keep all of her emotions to herself. This is probably why Elsa is eventually able to cope while Lady Macbeth ends up killing herself.
ReplyDeleteSomething else you could argue is the fact that both of them influence their closest relatives. Elsa indirectly influences Anna because the more Elsa tells Anna to leave her alone (so she does not hurt anyone), the more Anna gravitates towards her; this ultimately leads both of them into further conflicts. Lady Macbeth directly influences Macbeth by pushing him to kill Duncan and become King (because she wants to become Queen); once Macbeth kills Duncan, his mental illness leads him to create problems for both of them. Specifically, Macbeth becomes a ruthless ruler, causing everyone to eventually conspire against him. On the other end, Lady Macbeth kills herself, tormented by the state that her and her husband has caused.
